Background: Z/Yen's "Focus On" series highlights key business and financial centres from around the world. Here, we look at Busan, South Korea's second largest city at 3.4 million and a burgeoning centre for maritime industry, finance, and digital finance. Busan's ambitious plans for expanding their digital finance ecosystem include the creation of a urban blockchain and digital asset exchange, unifying services offered by the likes of Ethereum and Cosmos onto one platform. Moreover, we'll look at the work of Busan International Finance Centre, the incentives being offered to the international business community as well as the prospective ecosystem.

Mr. Myungshin Yoo leads the Financial Hub Support Team of the International Affairs Department at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea. He has an extensive expertise in statistics with an MS in statistics from University of California, Davis in the United States, and a BA in statistics from Seoul National University in Korea.
Throughout his distinguished career as a financial supervisor over the last two decades, Myungshin has performed various tasks in banking and insurance supervision, as well as consumer protection. In particular, taking advantage of his deep understanding of international business affairs and his expertise as a certified accountant and actuary, Myungshin successfully worked as a policy advisor at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors in Basel, Switzerland.
Mr. Hyo-Kyung Kim serves as the Director of Finance & Blockchain Division in Busan Metropolitan City. He holds a MS in Public Administration from Pusan National University and is currently pursing a Ph.D. in Information Systems at Pukyoung National University. Mr. Kim has demonstrated expertise across various public service areas including Economy&Policy, Employment&Labor, City Diplomacy Policy, Visual Culture Industry, Sports Promotion over 20 years.
Dr. Soongoo Ahn is a director at the Busan Finance Center. He earned his doctoral degree from Bayes Business School, City University of London and holds an M.Sc. in Economics and Strategy from Imperial College London. Before his tenure at the Busan Finance Center, he led the Sustainable Finance Division at UN Global Compact Network Korea and taught international business as an assistant professor at Ulsan College University.
His expertise lies in strategic hub (platform) ecosystems, applying this knowledge across various finance fields, including sustainable finance, digital finance, and maritime finance. With this expertise, he has collaborated closely with Charles Baden-Fuller, a Centenary Professor at Bayes Business School, and Heesung Yun, a Distinguished Professor at Korea Maritime & Ocean University, to research the prospective ecosystem of the Busan Finance Center. He is a member of the Academy of Management, The Korea Port Economic Association, and The Korean Association of Financial Engineering.
