By Charlotte Dawber-Ashley

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our Z/Yen collegue and friend, Mark Yeandle. Mark worked with us from 2002 until his illness in 2019, and will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate to work with and know him. Our thoughts are with Mark's wife and sons during this sad time. Please read Ian Harris' tribute to Mark here.

This month, we are are looking into the varied and complex security issues we presently face at the historic Spy Bar at Raffles Hotel, the former Old War Office of Churchill and his spy chiefs during World War Two. Unfortunatly, no charming spys will be present, but we will have Michael Mainelli, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, and Nick Fishwick, Non-Exec Director at HM Courts & Tribunal Service, and exotic cocktails! Book here. Keep calm and cool and carry on.

Busan Finance Center: On June 25, 2024, Busan was designated as a ‘Special Financial Opportunity Development Zone’(hereinafter Special Financial Zone). An opportunity development zones refers to a system aimed at fostering the relocation of businesses to regions and supporting balanced regional development through incentives and benefits, such as tax exemptions, regulatory exceptions, and financial support. Notably, among the other designated areas, Busan was the only one uniquely designated as a ‘Special Financial Zone’, highlighting the Korean government’s strategic commitment to developing Busan as a financial hub. The geographical domain of the Special Financial Zone consists of a total area of 750,976㎡, including the Busan International Financial Center (10,293㎡), general land (16,973㎡), and the second stage of the North Port Redevelopment Area (723,710㎡). Along with the designation, Busan Metropolitan City delineates a plan to develop the Busan International Finance Center as a global financial hub. First, the third phase of the Munhyeon Financial Area will be specialized in digital finance and will be developed into a digital valley that houses tech-based companies such as Fintech, blockchain, and software, as well as providing one-stop business support functions such as investment, guarantees, and financial education. Second, Busan Metropolitan City aims to facilitate the relocation of the Korea Development Bank (KDB) to the Munhyeon Financial Area. Third, prospective financial districts in the North Port Redevelopment Area are expected to focus on digital finance, global finance, maritime derivative finance, financial R&D, and public finance. With the Special Financial Zone designation and dedicated development plans, Busan Metropolitan City aims to become the Top 20 City in the world and the Top 5 City in Asia by 2030.

Bridgeworks: Why WAN Acceleration Is Vital for Financial Services Transformation: With the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in financial services, FinTech is undergoing somewhat of a transformation. While they might not be in some circles as popular as they were, both play a crucial role in the innovation of the industry. One that’s not to be scoffed at, either. For example, AI and ML can enable traders to reduce their risks and pick the right investments - increasing their profitability. The market for AI and ML is still quite healthy. In 2020, the market for AI and ML was projected to be US$158 billion in 2020 with a compound growth rate (CAGR) of 18% per annum. By 2030, the market value will have reached a staggering $528 billion by 2030. Both technologies can improve the processes, increase the gains and reduce the risks of financial institutions, including banks as well as the efficiency and performance of cryptocurrency or FOREX traders.
