Making Ripples in the SWIFT pond
Ripple just announced that seven banks are using their blockchain network – including Santander, UBS and UniCredit – with 90 more in the pipeline for making interbank payments using distributed ledgers. That sounds like an alternative to SWIFT and Marcus Treacher, a former Board Member of the SWIFT network and now heading up business development for Ripple, agrees that Ripple “could be part of the infrastructure of SWIFT” or an “entirely new network”. It’s really down to SWIFT’s response.
To find out if Ripple will replace or complement SWIFT come and join us on July 6th to hear the directions directly from Marcus Treacher.
Marcus Treacher is Global Head of Strategic Accounts for Ripple. He previously was HSBC’s Global Head of Payments Innovation where he established a new team focused on applying emerging fintech to solve customer challenges in digital payments, trade and supply chain. Overall, Marcus Treacher has over 30 years of experience in transaction banking and payment system technology, and served as a member of the Global Board of SWIFT from 2010 to 2016.
The evening will conclude with a discussion of the future of SWIFT between Marcus Treacher and Chris Skinner, chaired by Simon Taylor of 11:FS.
Simon Taylor is co-founder of the Fintech consulting group 11:FS and is the technical lead for the BB Fund, a VC Fund established explicitly for investments in blockchain start-ups that specialize in bank use cases.
