The growing global momentum for reform of the international financial architecture presents opportunities in 2023 to change the current trajectory of climate change. The COP27 conclusions recognised the need for major financial system reform to unlock investment for decarbonisation. Markets will have to be harnessed to support the delivery of a just transition to a low carbon economy. Conversely, on the current global temperature trajectory climate change is an existential threat to the financial system. Unlocking the full investment for decarbonisation requires reform of the supervision and regulation of the global financial system – a transition plan for finance.

Speakers:

Tom Tayler's work focuses on reform of financial markets to address systemic risks and market failures, with a particular focus on the climate crisis. He supports Aviva Investors work regarding sustainable finance and market and regulatory reform, including contributing to the work of the UN High-Level Climate Champions as a member of their finance team. He has also worked on projects linked to the UN Global Investors for Sustainable Development, the UN-convened Net Zero Asset Owners’ Alliance, the EU High-Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance, the UK Green Market Taskforce, and the UN PRI Legal Framework for Impact. Tom has also worked with and engaged policymakers on key sustainable finance reforms including the EU Sustainable Finance Action Plan, the DWP reform of pension trustees’ fiduciary duty, and engagement with the IOSCO Sustainable Finance Network.

Steve Waygood chairs the ESG Senior Leadership Team at Aviva Investors, and is a member of the CIO Investment Committee. Steve founded Aviva Investors’ Sustainable Finance Centre for Excellence. This Centre seeks to transform capital markets so that they support long term sustainable development. He also co-founded the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark, the World Benchmarking Alliance, the UN Sustainable Stock Exchange Initiative and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Coalition. He was also part of the group that helped write the Principles for Responsible Investment.

Steve was appointed to the European Commission High-Level Expert Group on Sustainable Finance, and the UK Green Finance Taskforce, and is also a member of the Financial Stability Board Taskforce on Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD).

Steve started his career at the World Wide Fund for Nature in 1995, where he chaired the business and industry core group and oversaw the ethical investment policy. He also served on the board of the UK Sustainable Investment & Finance association (UKSIF) from 2003 to 2010, serving as its Chairman from 2006.
