The financial world is shaken at intervals by scandals or revelations involving activities which, although not strictly speaking illegal, provoke a level of moral indignation. So what defences can be set up to ensure that corruption and scandal are to be prevented or at least avoided? Since the banking crash of 2008 in particular, compliance has become a major issue. Transparency, in turn, has become a rather over-used word, but is still a valuable concept. Smart Ledgers should prove to be a workable system that will cast light into dark corners and will prevent the continuing existence of what are sometimes referred to as Old Spanish Practices. It will hopefully reinforce confidence in companies, the system, and financial centres, which is all to the public good.

Speaker:
An honorary life fellow of Gresham College, Professor Tim Connell is an Emeritus Foundation professor from City, University of London, where he sat on Senate for many years. He is a graduate of Oxford, Liverpool and London universities, and has studied in Spain and Mexico. He also holds the degree of Doctor of Letters from City, University of London. His particular interest is in the field of professional training for translators and interpreters, where he works closely with the Chartered Institute of Linguists, of which he is a Fellow and a Vice-President, and is a regular contributor to the professional journal The Linguist.

Panelist: Mary Inman, Partner at Constantine Canon LLP and Head Of International Whistleblower Panel will be a guest speaker.

Mary Inman is a partner in Constantine Cannon’s London Office. After 20+ years representing whistleblowers in the U.S., she moved to London in July 2017 to launch the firm’s international whistleblower practice. She specializes in representing whistleblowers from the U.K., E.U. and worldwide under the American whistleblower reward programs.

Ms. Inman is a recognized expert and frequent author and speaker on areas related to the international application of the American whistleblower laws, financial frauds, health care reimbursement and government procurement. She has particular expertise in addressing Medicare Advantage risk adjustment fraud and is one of the lead attorneys in a prominent whistleblower case against UnitedHealth Group involving allegations the Medicare Advantage Organization submitted false claims for payment to the Medicare Program based on artificially inflated member risk scores. She also has extensive experience addressing fraud in government infrastructure projects, and representing city and state governments in prosecuting civil fraud actions.

Nigel Webb is a Partner at FTI Consulting, where he heads the firm’s EMEA Financial Services group. His team is responsible for the performance of investigations on behalf of numerous financial regulators around the world, many of which relate to concerns about financial crime. In addition to regulators, Nigel and his team are often engaged by financial institutions seeking advice in the face of regulatory interest or litigation. The team works not only with conventional financial institutions, but also with adjacent sectors such as online gaming, casinos and money-change businesses.

Nigel’s career before FTI has been varied, from its beginnings trading structured products for such firms as Drexel Burnham, through to being a Managing Director in the Alternative Investments business at JP Morgan. He has also been a partner in the field of financial risk management at both Arthur Andersen, and Deloitte.

Outside work, Nigel is an accomplished pilot, flying anything from single engined Pipers, through to former military jets.

Panelist: Brian Basham founder of The Broad Street Group, Primrose Care, Equity Development and ArchOver will also be a guest speaker.

Brian is a serial entrepreneur. He founded and floated The Broad Street Group, which he established after an early career as a financial journalist with the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph and The Times. Broad Street specialised in takeover bid communications. He also founded Primrose Care, caring for elderly people in their own homes, it was later sold to BUPA. He founded Equity Development, providing research services to smaller companies, which he sold and then bought back and more recently ArchOver, which is a unique crowdfunding marketplace lender, facilitating secured and insured loans to companies, which was sold to Hampden Group. He initiated and contributed to a report for Treasury on Smaller Quoted Companies and wrote the well regarded publication Tomorrow’s Giants, with the former senior Treasury official Craig Pickering.

Brian’s charitable activities include re-establishing the Remembrance in 1995 for the 50th anniversary of World War II. The initiative enabled the Royal British Legion to raise £20m in that year, saving it from probable dissolution. Remembrance has since, once again, become a regular feature of British life. He conceived the appeal Coming Home to raise funds for seriously wounded military personnel, that also raised £20m. He stimulated the reactivation of the British Dyslexia Association and has run two marathons to raise funds for Prostate Cancer research.
