Background: We have entered an era marked by rapid technological evolution and an ever-changing threat landscape. Security systems have evolved and developed from the earliest security system invented 170 years ago by Edwin Holmes, his alarm system was one of the earliest attempts to provide protection against unauthorized intruders and burglaries, and is a historically significant innovation in the field of security systems. From these early beginnings the global security industry has evolved exponentially and is now estimated to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars annually. We will chart the evolution of security systems from the early developments in19th century to the highly sophisticated and technologically advanced solutions available today.

Paul Miller is the Managing Director of National Monitoring with over 45 years’ experience in specifying and designing technological security measures, processes and systems to enhance the safety of vulnerable people and property throughout the UK.
Working closely with police forces, public sector, and critical national infrastructure clients he promotes the application of advanced technology to mitigate risks and enhance protection. Paul attained both an MSc in Security & Risk Management and an MSc in Professional Research Methods.
Paul is a Chartered Security Professional, the 100th registrant of the register that, as at the end of July 2022, reached 257 Chartered Security Professionals. He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals during 2022-2023 and a former Trustee of their Charitable Trust.
